Making a name with their pop art collage of musical styles and postmodern arrangements, LA’s dangerous new outfit Chemical Therapy incorporate everything from samples and drum machines to live instrumentation and sound effects. Alternative rock reinforced with a hip hop undercurrent, Chemical Therapy were formed in 2023 by Sweet Baby Nate, Tex, Taco, and Chris Cool. Three of which being former members of indie-rock band Heyrocco. As teenagers, Heyrocco began their journey via South Carolina in 2016. The band achieved minor international success with their debut album Teenage Movie Soundtrack, landing them millions of streams and tours across the U.S. and Europe with acts like Grouplove, Mutemath and The Lemonheads. Eventually the group retired their indie direction, allowing a new fusion of styles to naturally bloom into what is now simply known as “Chem T”.

Cuco
+ Strawberry Guy & Thee Heart Tones
Chicano lo-fi bedroom pop artist from Southern California who mixes romantic synth jams with playful wit.
Cuco embarks on the 4U Tour, a 24-show North American run this September. This tour will take Cuco to some of his biggest venues yet, including the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, Terminal 5 in NY, and the legendary Greek Theatre in his hometown of Los Angeles. The tour marks Cuco’s first dates since headlining a stage at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Festival last year.
In the first week of his tour, Cuco will perform at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, coinciding with Mexican Independence Day. The show will be a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, marking both the significance of Independence Day and a major milestone in Cuco’s career as he performs in his hometown. Additionally, comedian René Vaca and DJ Wyldeflower (KCRW) will open the evening, and The Mariachi Rams (the official Mariachi band of the LA Rams) will be joining Cuco on stage to perform a few special songs.
2023 saw the release of Cuco’s most recent Hitchhiker EP, which was recorded at Big Bad Studios in his hometown of Los Angeles and boasts production credits from Michael Beinhorn (Soundgarden, Hole, Red Hot Chili Peppers). The EP followed his sophomore album, Fantasy Gateway, which Pitchfork described as having “newfound shine” and marked the opening of a fresh chapter.
When Alex Stephens (A.K.A. Strawberry Guy) self-released his debut single in 2018, he was merely doing it out of a love for songwriting. What he wasn’t expecting was millions of streams and an avid worldwide fanbase.
A one-man impressionist, painting majestic soundscapes, Strawberry Guy blends truthful lyrics with lush arrangements to conjure new emotive worlds. Inspired by composers of the Romantic period, or Debussy, Ravel, and other classical artists of the 1800s, his wonderland moves like a Monet painting where arpeggios dance between meadows of dazzling dynamics and dramatic key changes.
Imitating nature’s effect on emotion, like 70s songwriters, or the fantastical soundtracks accompanying vibrant scenes in the Japanese animated Studio Ghibli films and video games, landscape is brought to the fore. Monet’s picturesque Meadow at Giverny features as the album’s accompanying artwork – perhaps a reminder of the rural Welsh countryside views through his childhood home’s window.
Take it slow, be at one with the wilderness and remember, when life gives you lemons, swap them for Strawberries.
None of her friends or family were surprised when Jazmine Alvarado announced she’d just joined a band as the lead singer. Back in middle school she’d walk around with a ukulele under her arm, she was in a class chorus, and she’d sing every opportunity she got — mostly in Spanish. They weren’t surprised when she told them what kind of music they were playing either — a kind of Chicano soul. Jazmine’s dad had been in a Tejano band when he was younger, and her parents introduced her to ’60s soul singers like Brenton Wood and Barbara Mason. It was, they thought, what Jazmine was destined to do.
The then-unnamed band she’d just joined, with a group of boys, some of whom she’d known from school in Hawthorne, California, would become Thee Heart Tones. Still in their teens when they formed, Thee Heart Tones draw from a deep well of Latin American standards and North American soul ballads but manage to pull something out that sounds fresh and modern.
And how else could the story of a modern band begin than with a DM on Instagram? “One day I got a message from Ricky Cerezo asking if I wanted to write a song for his new band,” Jazmine says. “I knew his drummer Jorge Rodriguez and the other boys from middle school, so they were familiar faces.” Jorge remembered Jazmine, too — the girl who always carried around her ukelele. “They sent me an mp3 of an instrumental they’d written and told me they wanted lyrics,” Jazmine says. “So I wrote some and sent it to them.”
That song ended up being “Don’t Take Me as a Fool,” a downbeat, minor key ballad on which Jazmine’s sultry, pitch-perfect vocals soar, and which is now destined for their debut album. But Jazmine still hadn’t met Ricky in person. That finally happened at their very first rehearsal. “Luckily,” she says, “we got along.” “Once she sang ‘Don’t Take Me As a Fool’, Jorge and I made eye contact,” Ricky says. “We both had goosebumps. We knew this was it; this was exactly what we wanted.”
Thee Heart Tones are Jazmine on vocals, Ricky on keys and organ, Jorge on drums, Jeffrey Romero on bass, Peter Chagolla on lead guitar, and Walter Morales on rhythm guitar. They’re all precociously young: Jorge is the eldest at 21 (“the old man of the band,” Ricky jokes,) Jazmine the youngest at 19, and the others are all 20.
Ricky met Jorge, Peter, Walter, and Jeff at Hawthorne High School. The boys were already in a band, with Peter on vocals, but they were playing heavy metal covers — songs by Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Metallica. Ricky’s dad, who eventually came up with the band’s name, introduced them to mainstream artists like Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, and also opened up a world of rare soul 45s. But it was “Is It Any Wonder” by a contemporary band called Durand Jones & The Indications that would change the course of their lives. “I played the song to Jorge and he said, ‘Why don’t we start doing something like this?’,” Ricky says.
After that first rehearsal with Jazmine, Ricky went home to play “Don’t Take Me As a Fool”, recorded as a voice note on his phone, to his dad. “I was hesitant. Dad knew this music better than anyone; he grew up with it. But he grabbed my phone and held it to his ear. His approval meant a lot to me. But he had the same reaction Jorge and I did when we first heard Jazmine sing. ‘This is going to be a hit,’ he told me. ‘You guys have something really special here’.” It was that same recording that caught the ears of Leon Michels and Danny Akalepse of Big Crown Records, who both heard the potential in the group immediately. After they signed to the label, Leon flew out to Los Angeles to record their debut album with Tommy Brenneck at Tommy’s Diamond West studio. They knocked out 14 songs in five days, capturing the charm of teenage soul and mixing it with their seasoned production prowess.
Thee Heart Tones debut album Forever & Ever is a testament to their unmistakable chemistry and talent that are both far beyond their years. Choosing to cover “Sabor A Mi”, a 1950s bolero by Mexican musician Alvaro Carrillo also shows a sophistication in their intention rarely found in kids their age.“It allows us to let our audience know we go back to our roots,” Jazmine says. “Growing up in LA, you get influenced by the city, the artwork, the music,” Ricky says. “Dad didn’t own a lowrider car, but other members of our family did. Impalas. El Caminos. I was influenced by the culture, particularly the Chicano culture. And oldies and soul music played a big part.” The style. The culture. The nod to the past. “That’s what we’re going for. We want to connect young Chicanos with their heritage. And we want to unite people — old and young.”

Steel Pulse
Jordan T & DJ Nappy
Bearing witness to the accelerating negativity of global affairs, Steel Pulse emerges with musical vengeance to halt the disarray of humanity. The bands twelfth studio production, titled Mass Manipulation, reflects four decades committed to bettering mankind through music.
Steel Pulse continues to be revolutionary in engaging controversial topics of racial injustice and human rights on a global scale. Their musical stance and conceptualizations are as potent and relevant today as they were at the beginning of their career. The album’s uniquely thematic approach provokes thought as it presses forward, toward humanities unification. A manipulation of our minds has been influenced by a New World Order currently dominating humankind. Steel Pulse reappears at a fated moment, armed with compassion, encouraging all people to reject false ideals, set higher goals, and demand more from themselves to further this unification.
Lead singer and guitarist, David Hinds’ creativity, human persona, and visionary views are revealed through inspiring compositions that capture the effects of the African Diaspora. These songs weave and interlock with each other, enticing all to stand together and unite.
The album begins with a continuation of past struggles in attaining freedom. From the opening song, “Rize,” one can hear, feel, and be uplifted through urgency established in its cadence. This urgency compels participation in the Windrush generation’s cause to rise against evil and controlling forces. Ancient melodies paired with catchy lyrics in “Stop You Coming and Come” transport the mind to a period of time where secrets of an African dynasty are unmasked. “Thank The Rebels” follows as a classic Steel Pulse anthem with powerful messages of awareness and inspiration. From the opening trumpet call, Hinds picks up the torch of wisdom, rallying humanity toward great aspirations. In “Justice in Jena,” rolling drums and repeated chorus structure highlight the hatred and racial intolerance that persists, despite the notion that society has progressed into a post-racial world. Haunting organs and eerie guitar interplay in “Human Trafficking” emulate the atrocities of this underground world, while desperate drumming and frantic horns bolster an emotional plea to admonish this horror.
Mass Manipulation evolves and sets to navigate the political transformation of changing social and economic environments. Impassioned vocals convey the pain and suffering experienced throughout “Cry Cry Blood.” This song features blistering horns to help settle the nerves and uneasiness felt. “No Satan Side” follows with its intoxicating tempo, rhythmic chanting, and riveting lyrics, defining the African Diaspora with redemption cries for, “Rastafari and live.” “N.A.T.T.Y (Natural And True To Yourself)” explodes with syncopated drumming and purposeful bass to unburden the soul. It is here where we find Hinds at his most personal and reflective state. The album’s title track, “Mass Manipulation,” positions exploding horns to drive home its warning, bursting the corporate glass which would serve to protect the deceitful and corrupt. In “World Gone Mad,” a jolting rap broadcasts the horrifying consequences of madness. Ensnaring drums and seducing bass encapture those evil and controlling powers embodied in “Black and White Oppressors,” while defiant lyrics, weaponized with energetic horns, serve to penetrate Babylon’s evil and systematic ways.
The album comes full circle as Steel Pulse’s legendary musical abilities aim to achieve a greater community for all. The promise of mankind’s salvation is prominently positioned with vocals offered to still calm in “The Final Call.” Stunning harmonica jousts invoke inward reflection and set free courage to conquer. “Higher Love (Rasta Love),” a beautiful Hinds reggae reinterpretation of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love,” exudes charisma and energy hailing for love across humanity. The album crowns with “Nations of the World.” Stabilizing lyrics, enforced by a commanding rhythm, beg freedom fighters, leaders, and citizens from all nations to come together in peace.
In the midst of today’s strife and turmoil, Mass Manipulation is Steel Pulse’s indispensable musical gift, as their forty year legacy continues to define the magnificent power and beauty of reggae music. As reggae revolutionaries, Steel Pulse is revered by the younger generation of artists and remains a powerhouse on stages around the globe. Through the example of Mass Manipulation, Steel Pulse demonstrates the endless possibilities that come from breaking down the walls of systemic greed and nurturing the fellowship of mankind.
